I wasn’t planning to write about Mata Jitu Waterfall this week.
Actually, I had another topic in mind until a guest sent me a photo a few days ago. It showed a section of the pools beneath the waterfall. Nothing unusual about that. People send photos after trips all the time.
What caught my attention was the caption.
“Still thinking about this place.”
The trip had happened months earlier.
That message reminded me of something I’ve noticed over the years while helping travelers around Sumbawa. People often arrive with one idea of what their favorite experience will be. Then the trip happens, and something unexpected takes that spot. Sometimes it’s a quiet village encounter, a spontaneous roadside stop, or even a visit to Mata Jitu Waterfall that ends up becoming the memory they talk about long after they return home.
For some, it’s Saleh Bay. For others, it’s a quiet beach they had never heard of before arriving.
And every now and then, it’s the mata jitu waterfall.
The First Time I Went There Wasn’t Special at All
At least not at first.
I think it was sometime around 2017. Maybe 2018. I honestly can’t remember the exact year anymore.
Back then I wasn’t paying attention to waterfalls. I was paying attention to schedules.
Who was arriving.
Who was late.
Whether the boat would leave on time.
The usual things that occupy your mind when you’re responsible for a trip.
I remember reaching the waterfall area and immediately looking for a guest who had wandered off ahead of the group.
Then somebody asked me to take a photo.
Then somebody else needed help with a bag.
By the time everything settled down, I finally looked around.
Not because I was trying to appreciate the scenery.
Simply because there was nothing else demanding my attention for a moment.
That’s probably when I noticed what visitors notice.
The sound.
Or maybe the lack of sound.
I still can’t decide which. Maybe it was Mata Jitu Waterfall. Maybe it was something else entirely.
A Small Detail That Stays in My Memory
There is a section of the trail leading toward Mata Jitu Waterfall where the air feels slightly cooler.
Not dramatically cooler.
Just enough that people sometimes comment on it without realizing why.
A traveler from Belgium pointed it out once.
He stopped for a second and said something like, “Did the temperature just change?”
I laughed because he was right.
I had walked that same path so many times that I no longer noticed.
Funny how visitors often see things locals stop seeing.
That happens more than people think.
Another guest spent several minutes watching sunlight move across one of the pools. Not taking photos. Not swimming.
Just watching.
I remember that because everyone else had already walked ahead.
He was the only one still standing there.
Years later, I still remember him.
I don’t remember the camera he carried.
I don’t remember which hotel he stayed in.
But I remember that moment at Mata Jitu Waterfall.
Photos Are Useful, But They Leave Things Out
Before arriving in Sumbawa, most travelers have already seen photographs of Moyo Island.
That makes sense.
It’s usually how trip planning starts.
The challenge is that photographs tend to flatten experiences into a single frame.
They show the waterfall.
They don’t show the walk getting there.
They don’t show someone slipping slightly on a rock and laughing about it five minutes later.
They don’t show the silence during the boat ride home when everyone is tired in a good way.
One guest from Ireland once told me that his favorite part of the day wasn’t the waterfall itself.
It was eating fruit on the boat afterward while the group talked about where they had traveled before.
If you had asked him before the trip, I doubt he would have predicted that.
Travel rarely follows the script we create in our heads.
The Reason Many Visitors Combine It With Moyo Island
The waterfall is only one part of the Mata Jitu Waterfall experience.
Most people visiting the area also spend time exploring other parts of Moyo.
That’s one reason a Moyo island Iumbawa itinerary often feels more complete than simply visiting a single location and heading back.
The island has a rhythm of its own.
That sounds vague, I know.
But after years of working here, it’s the best description I’ve found.
Some places encourage movement.
Moyo encourages slowing down.
Not everyone notices that immediately.
The people who do usually end up enjoying the trip the most, including their visit to Mata Jitu Waterfall.
Something I Learned From Organizing Boat Trips
Years ago I assumed travelers wanted to maximize every hour.
More stops.
More activities.
More destinations.
Sometimes that’s true.
Sometimes it isn’t.
I’ve seen guests on a Sumbawa private boat trip spend longer watching the ocean than they spend at the actual attractions.
One morning there were flying fish appearing beside the boat every few minutes.
The itinerary didn’t mention flying fish.
No one cared.
They were fascinated anyway.

Usually during the first email.
Sometimes during the first five minutes.

“I thought it would just be another waterfall,” she said.
Then she paused for a moment.
“I’m glad I was wrong.”
I didn’t have much to add after that.
Some places are easier to understand after you’ve been there.
